Project Profile:
Improving the lives of children and families: San Diego LISC restarted its AmeriCorps program with six full-time and three part-time members, placed with eight local CDCs. They organized a number of projects that impacted the lives of children and families. For example, one member developed a college readiness and ESL program for 80 middle and high-school age residents at two Wakeland housing complexes. Another member recruited volunteers for La Clase Magica, a program that teaches internet use to elementary school children. Members also held several workshops focused on financial literacy and taxes for close to 100 participants across the region. Workshops covered topics in such areas as budgeting, credit counseling and identity theft protection. And in City Heights area, AmeriCorps members recruited residents for Citbank’s Financial Futures program.
