Project Profile:
AmeriCorps: Houston LISC sponsored 19 AmeriCorps members (7 full-time; 12 part-time). With a strategic focus on homeownership, Houston LISC provided training for the members and placement with nonprofits that were helping low-income residents interested in these new opportunities. AmeriCorps members offered homebuyer education or counseling to 1,286 clients—of those 191 obtained mortgages and 155 closed on their homes. Also, AmeriCorps members assisted Habitat for Humanity in building the Oprah Winfrey/Angel Foundation home for Hurricane Katrina victims.
