U.S. Department of Justice
Congress responded to the success of the early demonstration by creating five successive half million-dollar earmarks to fund the expansion of CSI activity. This dependable source of funding, administered by the Department of Justice originally through the Executive Office of Weed and Seed (EOWS) and now the Community Capacity Development Office (CCDO), is critical to the work of CSI. While an important strength of the CSI model is its diversified funding base, CCDO dollars allow CSI to leverage a mixture of private, foundation, and government dollars. This multiplies the effectiveness of DOJ funds and keeps CSI a vital, innovative agent for change in public/private ventures. With continuation funding, CSI will expand and strengthen existing sites, provide support and technical assistance to new sites, and explore and reach out to other appropriate and promising sites across the country.
